And our complete menu raises pub fare to the level of fine dining. Whether it’s chicken wings, specialty grilled pizzas or a surprisingly sophisticated entrée, our chefs use only the finest and freshest ingredients to give you a one-of-a-kind dining experience in a one-of-a-kind tavern.
With so much of the very best life has to offer, it’s no wonder that visitors become regulars and regulars become family. Dinner reservations are highly recommended, especially Thursday through Saturday.
In 1893, on the quaint corner of Cato and Cherry Street, the Mee family built their home. The massive four story building contained a liquor store on the first floor and also allowed room for a boardinghouse on the upper levels. During the early 1900’s the business changed hands. The store turned into a bar, Uncle’s Café, and the boarding house became a brothel. Woonsocket was booming! Sailors would dock in Newport and travel to Woonsocket for the gambling, bars and prostitution.
It was 1962 when Martha and Evo ‘Curly’ Donnini purchased the bar and renamed it Ciro’s, after Curly’s dad. Curly had the vision to demolish and remodel the upstairs after the stunning Hampton Court, in England and to have a prestigious wine cellar and VIP Lounge in the basement, which offered wines from around the world, costing up to $1500! His goal was to serve ‘Food & Wine Fit for the Gods!’ and so he did.
With the help of his well known Black Hat Chef, 53 servants and numerous parking attendants, distinctly dressed as coachmen, Ciro’s was building a reputation as one of the best food and wine establishments in Southern New England. Soon, people would travel far and wide, waiting up to 2 weeks for a single reservation, unless of course, you were a local politician or a member of the mafia – who often snuck into the VIP lounge through the back door.
In 2002, after 40 years in business, Curly decided to retire at the young age of 89.
The following year, the Savini family purchased Ciro’s. Trying to keep the integrity and maintain the high standards of Curly’s legacy, the family remodeled the first floor with a cozy English Pub influence, and Ciro’s Tavern was born!
With the help of our dedicated staff, we are working on making Ciro’s one of the best restaurants in Southern New England, once again. Although we are just beginning our journey as the new stewards and we know that our current time here is only a small segment in the history of Ciro’s, we look forward to what the future has to offer us. We realize that it’s you, the people, who can help us carry on the tradition of being Woonsocket’s ‘Best Kept Secret’!
